Lot 95 in Auction #6 - A. Warne, Horsham dark aqua glass torpedo bottle.

Alfred Warne began a cordial factory in Horsham during the 1870s. A quick scan of the will and probate records held by the Public Records Office of Victoria shows that:
Alfred Warne, cordial manufacturer, Horsham died on 13th February 1889 leaving all his estate to his wife Olive.
Olive Warne, widow, 152 Peel-street, Windsor died on 20th October 1907. The property in Horsham had been sold to John Benjamin Head on the 2nd April 1904 for £400 with £200 still owing at the time of Olive's death.
John Benjamin Head, laborer, Horsham died on 7th February 1918. He held no real estate at the time of his death but almost half the value of his estate was "cordial machinery £30".

Lot 165 in Auction #6 - Trelawny Stilton Cheese factory stoneware jar.

Messrs. Sealy and Malcolm were highly entrepreneurial farmers in South-East Queensland during the 1890s. From records found thus far it appears they set up the Trelawney Butter & Cheese factory around 1891 or 1892 (note the spelling of Trelawney regularly appears with or without the e as on the jar). They were keen promoters of their productions and mounted huge displays at the Queensland exhibitions of 1894 and 1895.
They conducted some quite large trials of irrigation at Trelawney from approximately 1895 and in 1898 were mentioned as co-inventors and promoters of the "Cryogen" refrigerating system for Dairies.
By 1900 mentions of Trelawney cheese are far less frequent and in 1905 the Trelawney estate is up for sale including all the cheese making plant and materials.
The stoneware jars would appear to have been made during the earlier years of the factory (circa 1892-1895) by the Rogers pottery at Ipswich.

Lot 52 in Auction #6 - Coo-ee Cordials Brisbane Crown Seal Aerated Water. Kangaroo & Rising Sun trade mark.

Classic Australian trade mark on this crown seal. The Coo-ee Manufacturing Company began around August 1919 (the display advertisement below is from the Brisbane Courier, 6th August 1919).
They seem to have just focussed on large bottles of cordial in the early days going by their advertising. The Coo-ee name features in some late 1920s advertisements for Orange drink that would have likely been sold in bottles like these.
In 1932 the company was put up for tender (advertisement below: Brisbane Courier, 25th August 1932) and this seems to end the first phase of this business which is the period these crown seal bottles date from. The Coo-ee brand name itself was continued under a new business through until the 1950s at least again concentrating on Cordials to be mixed at home.

Lot 85 in Auction #6 - Hazelhurst Patent.

Very interesting patent. Like a Codd this bottle used a marble as a stopper to seal against a rubber ring inserted into a groove in the lip. Unlike a Codd this patent had the marble on the outside of the bottle and required a metal clip to hold it in place.

The example in this auction is unbranded (although it has the name of the glass maker - Turner & Co) and is without its clip. However with the patent application pictures below it should be possible to make one!
This bottle and closure was patented in Victoria on 23rd August 1886.

Lot 86 in Auction #6 - Cordaiy & Ashcroft, Parkes. Blue glass fluted Soda Syphon.

As you will see in the advertisement below, the business of Cordaiy and Ashcroft was divided at the end of June 1949.
On a side note, Charlie Cordaiy was a lawn bowls champion who represented Australia at the 1950 Empire (Commonwealth) Games!

Lot 316 in Auction #6 - Mowling & Dunkley, Allen's Patent Footrot Ointment Stoneware Jar, 57 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne.

The partnership of George Mowling and William James Dunkley appears to have begun in early 1868 and continued until their business was declared insolvent in April 1871. Prior to this Dunkley had been involved in a boot and shoe business with Henry Dunkley while George Mowling had also been in the boot trade and seemingly had begun dabbling in candle-making.
During 1869 Mowling & Dunkley were involved in the attempted creation of the Melbourne Patent Boot and Shoe Manufacturing Company (Limited), but a brief inspection of records suggests this was not a successful venture.
After the insolvency George Mowling returned to candle and soap making and eventually struck major success in the business bearing his own name and later known as G. Mowling & Son. George Mowling died in 1897. (See also Lot 298 in this auction an invoice with the letterhead from G. Mowling & Son, Footscray dated 1899).
W. J. Dunkley however struggled to get out of insolvency personally, returned to boot making briefly and then ran a hotel before once more falling into insolvency in 1875.

Great advertisements from the Melbourne Argus 11th December 1868 including calls for potters to tender for the making of 2000 earthernware jars for Mowling & Dunkley!.

Display advertisement from 10th July 1868 for Allen's Patent Footrot Ointment.

Executors auction notice for part of the estate of Mowling & Dunkley including the "Star Stearine Candle Works".

Lot 206 in Auction #6 - F. O. Pritchard, Mentone wide mouth Milk Bottle. Cow Pictorial.

Just an interesting little snippet from the Melbourne Argus dated 30th June 1937 (found via the TROVE Newspaper site). Wonder how many of these bottles got broken in the accident mentioned!
